About the Institute

Albert H. Small Normandy Institute logo against a yellow oval background with various international flags

Established in 2011, the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute was made possible through the generous contributions of Mr. Albert H. Small, a leading philanthropist in the greater Washington, D.C. region. Mr. Small fervently believed in the importance of preserving and disseminating the lesson that "freedom is not free" to young people and future generations. Mr. Small passed away in 2021 and his family foundation, The Albert and Shirley Small Family Foundation, continues to support his legacy.

The Albert H. Small Normandy Institute is housed within the History Department at the George Washington University and benefits from the expertise of GW staff and faculty to continue to disseminate Mr. Small's message.
